Local membership card
A PCT launches a ‘membership’ card programme to all people registered with a GP. The idea is that holders of the membership card will play a greater part in how NHS money is spent and how services are provided.

Alert cards
These cards are issued to patients with a condition that needs to be made known in the case of any urgent medical treatment. A COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) alert card contains information about how oxygen should be used to treat the patient. Another example would be a ‘red cell antibodies’ card.

CMV Blood transfusion cards
In case of requiring a blood transfusion, this patient carries an information card,
together with a set of brightly coloured stickers. This example is for a patient at risk of CMV, Cytomegalovirus, which is a common viral infection.
